I. Format for Cornell Notes
- Draw vertical line 2.5” from left edge of paper to create a Recall column for your notes.
- Take notes in class to the right side of the line.
- Use the Recall column (left side of the line) when you are reviewing your notes (see below).
II. Before class: review yesterday’s notes.
- Spend 5 minutes rehearsing answers to questions about the notes
- Develop a few questions to ask the professor
III: During class:active listening
- Attend all lectures and classes
- Get to class early, get a seat up front with few distractions
- Bring the intention to listen accurately and closely and will take good notes.
- Write short phrases or sentences.
- Use an outline if possible. Capture main ideas, supporting details and examples.
- Be consistent in use of abbreviations
IV. After class:
- Immediately after class:
- Stay in your seat, review your notes.
- Identify key ideas with symbols.
- Identify things you have questions about.
- Ask the professor questions if possible
- Within 24 hours:
- Condense the information to the main ideas, phrased as questions.
- Write them in the Recall column
- Over the long term:
- Schedule time to review your notes - at least an hour each week..
- Reduce your notes to a small number of summary notes.
