Rock Review

Reading: Chapter 2

You should read Chapter 2 and answer the questions if your introductory course was either Earth Science (Geology 8) or Natural Disasters (Geology 7), or if you are shaky on rocks.

Just review these minerals:

Rocks

1. Igneous:

• know the difference between intrusive and extrusive rock, and how we recognize the difference
• know something about these volcanic rocks: basalt, rhyolite, andesite
• know something about these intrusive rocks: granite, diorite, gabbro
• Read the section about volcanic activity (p. 37)

2. Sedimentary:

• know the difference between clastic and carbonate rocks, and other sedimentary rocks
• know where sediment comes from

3. Metamorphic Rocks

• know the difference between contact and regional metamorphism
• we will use these rock names: schist, gneiss, greenstone
• recognize that different minerals occur at different conditions of temperature and pressure. We will use the terms "high temperature-high pressure rocks", "low temperature - low pressure rocks", etc.
