Geology 10 (Physical Geology)

California State University, Sacramento

Week 8: Mass wasting, Flood frequency

Objectives

Upon completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • List the types of mass movements, and discuss the speed and components of each

  • Distinguish between a flow, a slide and a fall.

  • Describe the forces that act on a mass to produce mass wasting.

  • Discuss the role of moisture in slope stability- both too much or too little moisture.

  • Define soil creep, and give an example.

  • Discuss the differences between a mudflow and a debris flow.

  • Describe the engineered solutions that might reduce the risk of a mass movement

  • Describe what is meant by a 100 year flood.

  • Discuss the statistics that go into flood frequency estimates.
