Hydraulic Jump Photos

 

Hydraulic jump from front, looking upstream along the half-meter flume. You can see the turbulence of the hydraulic jump. The supercritical flow is just beyond the jump, and subcritical flow is approaching the area below where this photo was taken. You can see the flow is just beginning to smooth out as it passes this area.

 

Hydraulic jump from the side of the half-meter flume, you can see the change in flow at the jump. Supercritical flow is approaching from the left. The turbulence is caused by the supercritical flow (shallow and fast) colliding with the subcritical flow (deeper and slower).

 

Hydraulic jump side view just beyond the jump; shows the turbulence in the area near the jump. The flow is getting smoother as it moves on.
