While U.S. companies complain about certain conditions
in their workplaces, many other countries' businesses can provide clues
because of their liberal employee policies. European Union countries start
with four weeks of vacation, but some countries, such as
France, go beyond that to
five weeks of vacation per year, up to 26 weeks of maternity leave and up to
three years of unpaid parental leave. Other countries offer substantial
severance packages and high levels of job protection. In Japan, females are
allowed a monthly paid menstruation leave, and in many Latin American
countries there are 13 months of annual salary to ensure employees can buy
holiday presents for their families. All of these employee benefits make it
necessary for employers to remain flexible in their job assignments, perhaps
offering incentives for workers to return from leave early or rotating jobs
among several workers. [0142843]
