DESCRIPTION: Geography 102 looks at geography both as a subject of everyday
interest and utility and as a discipline with established strategies for
deciphering Earth's diversity. The course introduces major themes and
traditions that characterize geographic research. It evaluates sources
of information and proposes approaches to both description and analysis.
Specific goals of this semester's Geography 102 include:
- acquainting students with other geography majors and minors
- showing geography's array of specializations and employment prospects
- encouraging the informed use of library retrieval systems for research
- evaluating the Internet as an aid to geography's interests and tasks
- improving individual research, writing, and oral presentation skills
- disseminating information about geography on and off campus
REQUIREMENTS: Semester grades in Geography 102 are determined by eight
equally-weighted items or assignments:
Assignment #1: BIOGRAPHY--interviewing & writing about a classmate
Assignment #2: DISPLAY CASE--joining others to publicize geography
Assignment #3: THEMES & TRADITIONS--evaluating a journal article
Assignment #4: QUIZ--showing your skill with library & Internet
Assignment #5: TALK SUMMARIES--writing about our guest speakers
Assignment #6: RESEARCH--annotated bibliography & strategy summary
Assignment #7: PRESENTATION--short talk with illustrations
The eighth part of your grade is based on ATTENDANCE:
0-2 absences, A;
3-4 absences, B;
5-6 absences, C;...

TEXTS: Geography 102 has no required text. I will distribute readings
in class. Listen carefully to our CSUS librarians for details on library
research. Arrange computer access for Internet work. Keep a dictionary
and a style manual handy for written assignments.
