Methods and Curriculum

Course Description| Objectives| Technology

Course Description: This course examines theory, research, and exemplary curriculum and practices for children in preschool through the elementary grades, including content-specific connections between and among a variety of disciplines, ie.: literacy, social studies, the arts, science and mathematics. A developmental perspective will frame discussions about fundamental concepts, values, and principles of the subject matter disciplines. This course addresses some of the goals of the Child Development Major and fulfills the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Subject Matter Program Standard 4: Integrative Study.

Prerequisite: Completion of 60 units total credit, or instructor permission.

Number of Units: 3

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the philosophical and historical roots of curriculum in preschool and elementary school.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of social, political, and philosophical issues related to education.

  • Demonstrate understanding of perspectives on children’s development and learning and how these influence curriculum.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of standards in content area disciplines for P-8 curriculum.

  • Demonstrate understating of how content area disciplines are related, including methods of inquiry.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of strategies for instructional methods and materials in preschool and elementary school settings.

  • Apply these understandings in the development of a curriculum project which connects two or more disciplines taught in grades P-8.

  • Actively engage with peers in a collaborative and reflective learning community.

 

Technology Requirements:

The online component of curriculum and instruction is being delivered via the Web-based course management system, WebCT. Your course environment is a closed, secure environment. Your class is only accessible to registered students, the instructor, and the WebCT administrator. You will need a SacLink account to login into WebCT.

To access WebCT:

  1. Open your Web browser software -- Netscape or Internet Explorer.
  2. Type the URL http://online.csus.edu
  3. Select Login myWebCT
  4. Enter your SacLink account name for your WebCT ID. Remember the system is CASE sEnSiTiVe.
  5. Enter your SacLink password for the password.

Students will need an e-mail account and computer access to the Web. All Sacramento State students enrolled in one or more units can create a SacLink account for e-mail. Although a home computer with Internet access running Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Netscape Navigator would be beneficial, students can access the Internet from one of the campus student labs.
