Objectives - Chapter 8
Distinguish between absolute and relative age dating.
Define uniformatarianism and explain how it is used in geology and in every-day experiences.
Explain the rules of relative age dating and how they are applied
- orig. horizontality, superposition, lateral continuity, cross-cutting, inclusions, faunal succession, and correlation of fossil assemblages.
Given a geologic map, cross-section or block diagram, use the rules of relative age dating to put geologic events in their proper time sequence.
Given an assemblage of fossils each w/ known life spans, determine the age of the rock in which the assemblage is found.
Define unconformity, disconformity, and angular unconformity and explain their significant in relative age dating.
Explain how radioactive decay is used in absolute age dating.
Give the half life of a radionuclide, its abundance in a rock, an the abundance of the daughter product, determine the age of the rock.
