The original “Great Stupa” was built sometime during the 3rd century BCE out of brick
( perhaps with a wooden railing around it similar to the later stone railing seen in these images), quite possibly during the reign of Andhra himself. During the Shunga dynasty in 185-172 BCE, the stupa was covered over with stones cut to resemble bricks, and this is the surface that has survived to the present day.
