Even more than with the stupa carvings shown earlier, animals and nature spirits are shown engaged in the worship of the sacred trees. In the carving shown above, wild elephants seem to be honoring the tree in the center--perhaps watering it with their trunks, as watering such trees is a common gesture of worship. The right side of the carving below shows ogre-like beings as part of a scene involving the sacred tree on the left. Here too the exact topic of the story is unclear.
