The gateways that surround the “Great Stupa” at Sañci seem to have been added during the period between 73 BCE and 50 CE (most likely during the first few decades of the first century CE). Although they serve the important function of marking the four cardinal entry points to the base of the stupa, as noted in the previous description, they are of even greater historical interest because they are covered with interesting figures and scenes carved in stone.
