Chem 1A
General
Chemistry
California State
University, Sacramento
Course
Description
The fundamental principles
and concepts of chemistry, including stoichiometry,
thermochemistry, atomic and molecular structure, solution
chemistry, acid-base chemistry, phase diagrams, and
chemical kinetics. The course is fairly mathematical and
requires an ability to do algebraic computations. Lecture
three hours, laboratory six hours. Note: In order to
enroll, all students must pass a qualifying exam given
prior to each semester. If students cannot take this
exam before the beginning of the semester, it will be
given during the first laboratory session of the
semester. The qualifying exam can be taken in the Testing
Center, on campus(278-6296). Prerequisites: two
years of high school algebra and one year of high school
chemistry or the equivalent. (CAN CHEM 4)
Five units.
Why Take This
Course
Some benefits of Chem 1A:
- The faculty will do everything they possibly can
to help you succeed.
- A phenomenal number of office hours for
interaction with instructor.
- You will participate in an online learning
community.
- You will interact with classmates through
electronic discussion lists as well as student groups
(required!).
- It partially satisfies the requirements for all
sorts of majors, e.g. engineering, biological
sciences, physics, chemistry, geology, nutrition.
- It counts for General Education (Areas B1 and
B3).
- There are all sorts of structures and devices that
are designed to help you succeed.
Technology and
Mathematics Requirements
Students will need an electronic mail account
and computer access to the Web. All CSUS students
enrolled in this class must create a SacLink account for
electronic mail and Internet services. For further
information on SacLink check the UCCS documentation page
at http://www.csus.edu/uccs/document/document.htm.
Although a home computer with a high speed modem running
Netscape or Internet Explorer would be beneficial,
students can use the Web from one of the campus
student labs.
