Chemistry 1A
Diagnostic Test Information
The Department of Chemistry used the California Chemistry Diagnostic Test to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities you must possess if you are to succeed in general chemistry. A minimum score is required for you to enroll in or continue in Chemistry 1A.
The test consists of 44 multiple-choice questions covering the following general topics:
Compounds/Elements
Reactions of Matter
Periodic Properties
Chemical Dynamics
Mathematics
States of Matter
Structure of Matter
Solutions
Laboratory Skills
Questions are based on content covered in a high school chemistry course that prepares students for college chemistry. Math questions cover ratios, solving simple algebraic equations, graphing and interpretation. Test questions have been checked for statistical and course grade validity.
How do you prepare for the diagnostic test? Review the general chemistry topics listed using a high school chemistry text. The CSUS library contains numerous chemistry texts. Ask the Science librarian for help. The math questions are reasonably basic and test math skills you should possess if you had high school algebra I and 11.
Where do you take the diagnostic test? The diagnostic test is given each semester during the first laboratory period of Chemistry IA. You will be told your score and its interpretation immediately after you take the diagnostic test.
What if my score is too low? If you do not achieve a passing score, you should take Chemistry 4, Chemical Calculations. It will help prepare you for Chemistry IA.
