Students must pass the WPE before enrolling in this course; there is no formal course prerequisite, although History 5 (Modern Western Civilization) or HRS 11 (Arts and Ideas of the West, II) is helpful as background material. In the course students will focus on gaining an appreciation of the diversity and meaning of the humanities in this period, on writing critical thought essays on issues raised in the class, and on deepening their own sensitivity to and appreciation of works of art, music and literature. The humanities of this period is full of dynamism, color and drama, from the panoply of baroque Rome and the trial of Galileo to the dawn of the Age of Revolution and the stirrings of national consciousness in Germany.
