Filipinos in World War II

Transitioning to Filipinos in World War II

As we transition from the 1930s to the 1940s, let us read Evangeline Canonizado Buell's book, Twenty-Five Chickens and a Pig for a Bride: Growing Up in a Filipino Immigrant Family. In contrast to Bulosan's book, America is in the Heart, Buell narrates the Filipino American story from a woman's point-of-view. Please listen to her speech at the Asian Art Museum and also listen to the lectures by Dr. Sobredo and Mel Orpilla (FANHS President) in the same event.

When we return to class on Thursday, please be prepared to discuss Buell's book and prepare to compare and contrast Bulosan's and Buell's point-of-view.

ASSIGNMENT: write a 300-word essay (typed, single-spaced) that describes the life of Buell and how it compares with the life described by Bulosan. DUE: this Thursday.
