All students under the 1992-94 and subsequent University Catalogs must complete 51 units of General Education requirements, including the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement.

Approved General Education courses are listed in the updated online Catalog.

Writing Intensive
One Writing Intensive course, i.e., a course with comprehensive writing assignments (minimum 5,000 words) is required. This requirement may be met either with a GE course listed in the Catalog. (Writing Intensive courses taken to meet major requirements do not apply to the nine-unit upper division requirement in GE.) Completion of GE Areas A2 and A3, junior standing, and passage of the Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) or Engl 109M/ENGL 109W are prerequisites for enrollment in a Writing Intensive course.

Race and Ethnicity in American Society
For students with catalog rights beginning Fall 1990 or later, a GE course meeting the Race and Ethnicity in American Society is required. Students may select one of the courses listed under this area in the Catalog. The course may also be applied to the Area requirements.

History and Government

Demonstrated competency in U.S. History, U.S. Constitution, and California state and local government is required for graduation. These requirements may be satisfied through appropriate courses or through examinations given each semester by the History and Government departments.

English Composition

Two semesters of college-level English Composition courses, English 1A and 20 (or their equivalents) with a grade of "C-" or higher, are required for graduation.

All students subject to degree requirements of the 1979-80 and subsequent catalogs must satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) in order to graduate. To do so prior to Fall semester 2009, students took the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) or ENGL 109M/109W. Beginning Fall semester 2009, students must complete the GWAR by passing a Writing Intensive course.

Students having satisfied the GWAR at other CSU campuses may be considered to have satisfied the requirement at Sacramento State. Evidence of successful completion must be provided. See the current year Student Registration and Advising Guide for a complete explanation of all writing requirements.
