More churches than ever will take part in Sacramento State’s annual outreach at their services on Sunday, Feb. 25, as the University – and all universities in the CSU system – celebrate "Super Sunday."

For more than 10 years the CSU has joined faith-based community leaders to promote the value of higher education to young people at churches in predominantly African American communities.

This year, Sac State leaders, along with many others, will visit three churches, playing special videos urging young congregants to think seriously about pursuing college educations.

In addition to hearing from University officials during the service, potential students and their parents will get a chance for face-to-face meetings with representatives from Sac State’s Student Affairs, Admissions and Outreach, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Student Engagement and Success, and many other University departments. During these smaller gatherings, the young people and parents can learn more about what it takes to enroll in college, and succeed once there.

“It is an honor and a blessing that so many churches open their doors for us,” says Sac State President Robert S. Nelsen. “The young people that we meet have an amazing energy, and their enthusiasm is contagious. I hope to see them at Sacramento State soon.”

This year’s schedule includes:

  • St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church: President Nelsen will attend the 10 a.m. service.
  • Antioch Progressive Church: Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Ching-Hua Wang will speak to parishioners at the 10 a.m. service.
  • Common Ground, A Covenant Church: Student Affairs Vice President Ed Mills will address the congregation at the 10:30 a.m. service.
