Two academies have been added to the 2017 lineup: the Coding Academy and the Cyber Security Academy. Students will work with professors in the computer science lab and learn how to code and how to defend against online attacks.
Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye will visit the Democracy in Action Academy, which is led by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Laurie Earl.
Other academies include Engineering and Robotics, Farm-to-Fork, Fashion, Fire and Emergency Services, Forensics, Get Bright with Biotech, Health Careers 101, Law Enforcement, Multimedia Journalism, and Theater and Performing Arts.
The weeklong academies run June 26-30, July 10-14, July 17-21 and July 24-28. Students will explore different careers with hands-on activities, work with professors in the laboratory, and go behind the scenes with industry professionals. And they will get a taste of college.
“Our academies give high school students the kinds of experiences they can’t get anywhere else,” program coordinator Liz Arellanes says, pointing to activities such as creating dishes with fresh local produce, building robots, creating news stories on smartphones, conducting biotechnology experiments, and solving a mystery with DNA evidence.
