The exhibit in the Robert Else Gallery includes Rimas VisGirda’s “Gold Hat.” (Sacramento State/Craig Koscho)Sacramento State’s Art Department honors the impact of one of its renowned former professors with “The Legacy of Ruth Rippon.” The free exhibit runs Nov. 29 through Dec. 15 in the Robert Else Gallery on campus.
The exhibit is being presented in conjunction with a show of Rippon’s own works at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. “Exuberant Earth: Ceramics by Ruth Rippon” runs through Feb. 4 at the Crocker.
Rippon, well known for her ceramics pieces, taught at Sac State from 1957 to 1987. The exhibit will feature works by 15 of her former students. Regular gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. A special reception will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in the gallery.
This year is Rippon’s 90th birthday. During her tenure at Sac State she taught hundreds of students, and some of them are honoring her legacy through the exhibit.
During her career, Rippon was named Artist of the Year in 2008 by the California Arts Council, was recognized as one of 100 Distinguished Women Artists by the Fresno Art Museum, and has collections in venues throughout the country including the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, N.Y.; the Memorial Museum in Rochester, N.Y.; and the San Francisco Art Commission.
