Preview story: Sacramento State is ready to welcome new and returning students to campus, and what a welcome it will be, with several weeks of activities scheduled to make the transition from summer to school as pleasant as possible.
It all starts Friday, Aug. 26, when freshmen converge on campus for Move-In Day (csus.edu/housing/movein), checking into their new homes in Sierra, Sutter, Draper and Jenkins halls. Housing and Residential Life also will welcome students who are sophomores and up moving into American River Courtyard at that time.
Beginning at 7:30 a.m., the new student residents, along with their move-in helpers, first will go to the Leslie and Anita Harper Alumni Center at the south end of campus for check-in and processing, then head to the residence halls for the actual move. Each student has received a prescheduled check-in time.
In an effort to keep the new Hornets healthy this semester, the University’s Student Health and Counseling Services will provide free flu shots to students in the Housing Quad. And Sacramento State’s newest coffeehouse/eatery, Grumpy Mule, will serve students free samples of their cold-brewed coffee.
While students are busy arranging their rooms and making new friends, their family members can take advantage of the Parents Lounge at Desmond Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coffee, water, doughnuts, and other goodies will be available, as will plenty of Kleenex for those feeling a bit sentimental. A barbecue for new students and family will be held in the Main Quad from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and a parents reception runs from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at River Front Center.
Later that evening, all students are invited to a free outdoor screening of Captain America: Civil War at 8:30 p.m. at the Housing Quad, courtesy of the University’s UNIQUE programs (theuniversityunion.com/unique) and the Residence Hall Association.
It’s all part of Sac State’s Weeks of Welcome (Hornet WOW). Sponsored by more than 30 campus offices and departments. Hornet WOW is more than a month’s worth of activities and events put on by groups and agencies across the campus, designed to make the college experience an enjoyable one.
The Nooner series of concerts kicks off with a Gravy Nation moderate rock concert at noon Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the University Union.

University President Robert S. Nelsen will host a social in the Library Quad from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6.
And this year’s Phlagleblast game will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the University Union. This year’s theme is “A Burst of Color,” providing an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to learn more about all the vendors, offices, and services offered by the University Union.
Other activities include:
