Sacramento State’s One World Initiative (csus.edu/oneworld) is focusing on “Global Perspectives on Inheritance” for the 2016-17 academic year.

The One World Initiative brings students, faculty, and staff together to explore topics from different angles. “Global Perspective on Inheritance” will be seen through events, lectures, and projects around campus, providing insight into concepts that shape and transform the lives of the University community. The program seeks to connect Sac State to the community and to educate on a topic that people might not be exposed to in the classroom or at home.

“The One World Initiative allows the campus community to create curricular and co-curricular experiences for students related to a common theme,” says Mimi Coughlin, director of the One World Initiative. “The theme evolves with each new perspective that is brought to the exploration and inquiry of the theme.”

One World-related events already have begun across campus and will continue throughout the school year. Past One World Initiative topics have included happiness and power.

Fall events this year include: 

  • Sac State anthropology alumnus Gilbert Herdt will deliver the George Rich Colloquium Lecture, “From Ritual Sex to Sexual Individuality: The Disinheritance of Sambia Sexual Culture, 1974-2013,” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Leslie and Anita Harper Alumni Center. The event will be hosted by the Anthropology Department and will be open to the public. A reception follows.
  • First Year Experience (FYE) hosts Jullien Gordon, a writer and founding partner of the New Higher consultancy. He will lecture on “The Other 4.0: How to Maximize College and Minimize Debt” at noon Thursday, Nov. 3, in the University Union Ballroom.
