The Community Engagement Center is coordinating a weeklong celebration of the U.S. Constitution with a newly expanded Constitution and Civic Engagement Week, Monday, Sept. 14, through Saturday, Sept. 19, using the theme “Constitution Matters.” Speakers and events are addressing issues that relate to the Constitution and why it matters so much to us in so many ways. Here are some of the week’s highlights:
- ASI Voter Registration Drive (Sept. 14-18): Associated Students Inc.’s Office of Governmental Affairs will staff tables at the University Union and the University Library to register individuals to vote.
- “Why the Constitution Matters: Revitalizing Voting to Make Democracy More Accessible” (noon Monday, Sept. 14; Multi-Cultural Center, Library 1010): A talk by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty.
- “The Challenges of Being a California Voter” (noon Tuesday, Sept. 15; Multi-Cultural Center, Library 1010): A talk by election reform advocate Kim Alexander.
- Constitution Quiz Bowl (noon Wednesday, Sept. 16; Hinde Auditorium, University Union).
- “New Dimensions of Freedom: How the Supreme Court’s Ruling on Marriage Equality Could Revitalize Our Constitution” (7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17; University Union Ballroom): A talk by gay and transgender rights attorney Shannon Price Minter.
- “Raising Issues About Citizens, Activism and the Constitution” (3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18; University Union, Orchard Suite): A talk by Sac State Professor Emeritus Duane Campbell.
- Days of Service (Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19; South Oak Park neighborhood): A volunteer effort that will include painting, landscaping, minor home repairs, and more.
