The University's new president, Robert S. Nelsen, was on hand to greet them.
This year’s event started at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, as more than 1,700 students moved into the freshman residence halls and the American River Courtyard suites.
This year, though, the parking lot usually used for the day was closed because of nearby construction, so the setup was split in two.
“We knew we couldn’t park everyone at the residence halls and get everybody moved in efficiently, so we made some changes,” says Director of Housing Samuel Jones.
Because the most time-consuming part of the process is checking in – filling out forms, getting the key and the meal card – students, their families, and friends first went to the Alumni Center on the campus’s south end. That’s where the paperwork was completed.
Once that was accomplished, they drove to the residence halls, where unloading zones had been marked off at each hall. Belongings were unloaded at curbside with the help of volunteers so vehicles could leave to make room for the next one. Shuttle buses operated all day long, ferrying parents between the two sites.
And, as always, the Housing staff had spent the summer sprucing up the premises. This year, it was at Draper Hall, which received new beds, carpeting, and lighting, and got a fresh coat of paint. There’s even an embossed image of mascot Herky in the hall’s carpeting in front of the mailboxes.
Once the dust settled, the students were to be treated to a free screening that night of Avengers: Age of Ultron in the Res Hall Quad, a self-defense workshop Aug. 29, a Splash Bash and capture-the-flag game Aug. 30, and a presentation about campus safety from Sac State’s community service officers Aug. 31.
More activities are planned as part of Sac State’s Hornet WOW (Weeks of Welcome) across the campus for new and returning students during the first several days of the new semester. They include:
- Wednesday Nooner Concerts begin at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, in Serna Plaza.
- Students will take part in one of the largest dodgeball games ever with the annual Throwdown Dodge Ball Tournament at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at The WELL.
- The Hornet football team will take on Eastern Oregon at 6:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Hornet Stadium.
- The University Union will be transformed overnight for the annual Phlagleblast, an event that highlights all the great vendors, offices, and programs offered at the University, and includes raffles and swag. Stop by anytime between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.
- Say “Cheese!” Get together with fellow Hornets and President Nelsen for the annual Swarm Photo, a group snapshot Thursday, Sept. 10 in the Library Quad. The crowd starts gathering at 11:55 a.m.
