A Sacramento State Construction Management team won the national concrete solutions championship at the Associated Schools of Construction’s (ASC) Region 3 student competition last weekend in Downers Grove, Ill. This makes the fourth consecutive national title for Sac State's concrete solutions teams.

In addition, another Construction Management team finished second in the health-care preconstruction competition at the ASC meet.

"Sac State demonstrated once again that we have the best Construction Management students in the country,” says Professor Justin Reginato, who coached the health-care team. “Conference organizers, industry judges from multiple competitions, and faculty from other universities repeatedly said how impressed they were with our concrete and health-care teams.

“Top results in national competitions are further proof that the combination of high-quality classroom instruction and the strong involvement of the construction industry are working to produce the most-sought-after graduates,” Reginato says.

Twelve concrete solutions teams from across the country were challenged to prepare a successful bid for a private client in New York. They were faced with a remote location, “terrible terrain” and a completion deadline of just 150 days. The teams had to provide a detailed request for qualifications, a concrete pour sequence schedule, and other deliverables, and made an oral presentation to the judges.

Members of Sacramento State’s concrete solutions team were John Peace, Ray Kelley, Gabriel Alvarez, Nick Corcoran, Jordan West, and Brett Snyder. The students were coached by CM alumni Mike Seegert and Brad Dent, and CM adjunct faculty member Tony Tipton. 

The health-care team faced off against 11 other schools from around the country to estimate and plan the construction of a hospital, and to present their preconstruction proposal to the judges. Representing Sac State were Nick Zmay, Scott Davis, Javier Alvarez, Jose Pio, Andrey Dzyuba, and Teddy Hanford. All are seniors. In addition to Reginato, their coaches were CM alumni Henry Meier, Jason Miller, and Alyssa Zayas, who was a member of the Sac State team that won ASC’s inaugural health-care preconstruction competition in 2013.

The Sacramento Construction Management Education Foundation (SCMEF), a nonprofit advisory board that supports Sac State’s Construction Management program, covered travel expenses for the students and their industry coaches. – Dixie Reid
