Does SafeConnect track my computer usage? Is my computer usage still private?
No, SafeConnect does not track your computer usage. Your computer usage remains private. SafeConnect does not log your keystrokes, get or save information you type in, nor does it track your navigation of the internet. SafeConnect only checks to see that you have current anti-virus and anti-malware installed and running and that your operating system is checking for updates.
What is SafeConnect and why is it being used?
SafeConnect helps to keep the Sac State network free from viruses and malware. Everyone who uses the wireless network benefits from the use of SafeConnect.
SafeConnect verifies that your laptop has automatic updates turned on for Windows or OSX operating systems and virus and malware detection and eradication software.
When you logon to the wireless network, you will be prompted to install the SafeConnect client if it has not been installed previously. Once installed, the SafeConnect client will continuously validate that your system has the minimum security software running and up-to-date as per the school's acceptable use policy

Who will be affected by the SafeConnect requirements?
Staff and students connecting to the wireless network via a laptop computer running Windows or Mac operating systems will be required to install the SafeConnect client and comply with the related minimum security standards in order to gain full internet access. Smartphones, iPad's and other mobile devices will automatically be recognized and exempted when connecting to our network.
What if my system doesn't comply with the campus security standards enforced by SafeConnect?
If your system is deemed to be out of compliance after the allowed warning period, you will received "limited network access." Your internet access will ONLY include limited campus resources (such as SacCT and My Sac State), and access to sites where recognized anti-virus tools can be downloaded.

What does my laptop need to meet security requirements so I can use the wireless network?
1.) SafeConnect Client: Your machine must have the SafeConnect client and related "Policy Key" installed. You will automatically be prompted to complete this installation if you connect to Sac State's network and do not have the client installed. 2.) Operating System Updates: Your machine must also be configured to check for available operating system updates. Configuring your machine to automatically download and install such update is recommended but not required.
3.) Anti-Virus Software: SafeConnect will validate that you have Anti-Virus software installed and running with up-to-date virus definitions. How do I set up my machine to meet the necessary security standards?
If you are connecting to the campus network with a personal machine running Windows or Mac operating systems, visit the SafeConnect information page for help in getting up your machine to meet the minimum security standards.
What exactly does SafeConnect do when installed on my machine? What about my privacy?
SafeConnect continuously validates that your system meets the minimum security standards for connecting to our campus network. SafeConnect checks to see only that your machine is looking for operating system updates and has up-to-date anti-virus software running. Please note that SafeConnect is only active on your machine when you connect to Sac State's campus network and that personal user data is not being collected or stored.
What are the benefits of implementing SafeConnect?
SafeConnect is part of Sacramento State's effort to help you keep your computers as free as possible from viruses and operating system security holes. Machines protected in this way generally perform better and requirement much less downtime due to damage caused by malicious software. SafeConnect can also help ensure that the average user has the fastest possible browsing experiencing while connected to the University's network by ensuring that communication from malicious software does not flood the University's network and result in slower connections for legitimate users.
I completed the SafeConnect download/installation but when I try to go online I receive a message saying I need to install the Policy Key.
The Policy Key should automatically be part of the SafeConnect download and installation process. If you've completed the installation but are still receiving the message mentioned above, here are some possible sources of the issue:
1.) Something is preventing the Policy Key from communicating with the SafeConnect server. The most common cause is a firewall or anti-virus program denying access. You'll need to make an exception from your firewall configuration to allow internet access for SCClient.exe and SCManager.sys. Via your Windows machine you can open your Security Center and select "manage firewall". In the new window that displays there will be an exceptions tab. Click the exceptions tab, then the Add button, navigate to the Safe*Connect Policy Key and click "OK".
2.) The service may be "hung". In order to resolve this issue, the simplest solution may be to uninstall SafeConnect, reboot your computer and then re-install the software.
I have anti-virus software installed, running and up to date but SafeConnect still gives me a message saying I need to update my anti-virus or that it's not installed at all.
There are a few reasons why SafeConnect might indicate that an anti-virus requirement is outstanding even though an anti-virus program is already installed:
1.) If you have two anti-virus programs running together or an old anti-virus program wasn't uninstalled complete, SafeConnect will sometimes misread this situation where two anti-virus programs are running concurrently and give a false report of no anti-virus program being present. For this reason, we recommend that you use only one anti-virus program and uninstall any additional program(s). Also, leftover folder and other bits from incompletely removed anti-virus programs can have a similar effect on SafeConnect. If you were formerly running a different anti-virus application, try uninstalling it again.
2.) The anti-virus program you are using may not be recognized by SafeConnect. Click HERE for a list of anti-virus programs recognized by SafeConnect.
I've been asked to log in more than once. Why?
The system is configured for a one-time login, you may be asked to re-authenticate periodically. The most common reason for this is if your computer has been off the network for some time and lost its IP address lease.
If I'm told that I'm only being provided "limited network access", what am I allowed to access?
When you are only receiving "limited network access" you will ONLY be limited to SafeConnect related resources such as our main SafeConnect informational page and SafeConnect FAQ’s. Additionally, limited network access will still allow you to visit outside resources for the purposes of bringing your machine into compliance (e.g., Anti-Virus software download sites) in order to restore your full network access.
What do I do if I receive a message saying my anti-virus is not running or up-to-date?
If SafeConnect detects that your anti-virus software is not running or up-to-date, you will receive a warning message letting you know that you need to re-start your anti-virus or update your virus definition (.dat) files. What happens if I uninstall SafeConnect and/or the Impulse Policy Key?
You can uninstall SafeConnect and the related Policy Key at any time. However, you will switch from full internet access to "limited network access" within minutes. You will be asked to install SafeConnect again as though you were a new user and you will be limited to accessing key campus resources until you do so.
What if I'm currently using a campus-owned computer?
If you are using a campus-owned machine, our campus licenses allow for McAfee to be installed if you are using a Mac and Microsoft Forefront to be installed if you are using a PC. These products are available at no cost to you and should be used to ensure that your machine can meet the campus security standards and that you have full internet access.
Why won't the SafeConnect .exe file run when clicking on it in a browser?
1) Change the browser's security settings to allow executables to run or download.
2) Use a different browser. If a second browser is not available. Download and install Chrome. The chrome file is a .MSI file and should be able to run.
3) Use a computer lab or different computer to download the file from http://www.csus.edu/irt/Software/ and save the file to a USB drive or CD/DVD. Run the file from the USB or CD/DVD.
Why won't the SafeConnect agent install?
Try logging onto the computer using the administrator account to install the SafeConnect policy key.
It seems SafeConnect is installed correctly, but when navigating to a web page, why does the warning page still appear?
The SafeConnect service may not be running on your machine because the anti-virus software might have disabled the service.
1) Via ctrl+alt+del access the Task Manager.
2) Click on the Services tab.
3) Click on the Services button.
4) Scroll to the SafeConnect service and double-click on it.
5) Change the Startup type to Automatic.
6) Click the Start button.
