Exam 3 will be administered on Thursday, May 16th, during regular class time.

The exam will consist of a mix of fill-in, multiple choice, short essay, and true/false questions, and will be worth a total of 100 points. You will be permitted to write on the exam, you only need to bring a writing utensil. The exam will contain questions about the material from the last third of the course; it is not a cumulative exam!

For Exam 3, you should be familiar with the following concepts:

1.          What do the 3 major theories of conceptual development have to say about what concepts are and how they are acquired? What are the problems with the theories? What are the similarities and differences between them? Be able to describe how each theory would say that a particular instance of a concept develops.

2.          What do we know about children’s understanding of the concepts of time, space, number, and mind?

3.          In problem solving what are the states of analysis (initial state, intermediate states, goal state)?

4.          Know the common methods for problem solving (e.g., analogy, means-end, etc).

5.          What differentiates the “back-to-basics” approach from the “comprehensive training” approach to schooling?

6.          Know the general developmental trajectory of math skills.

7.          What are some reasons we might see differences in mathematical performance?

8.          Explain the process of learning to read (from emergent literacy to possible teaching techniques).

9.          How can children use drafting and revision to improve their writing?

10.      What are some pros and cons of exposure to computers? What is your opinion about children’s computer use (i.e, when and how should they use computers)?

11.      What does IQ measure? How do you calculate a standard IQ score? What are the pros and cons of administering IQ tests to children?

12.      Know the basic tenets of both Sternberg’s and Gardner’s theories of intelligences.

13.      Be able to explain what a learning disability is, in your own words. How is a learning disability similar and/or different from mental retardation?

14.      Know the basic characteristics and/or defining features of Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, and Autism.
