project 2

REVIEW OF A RESEARCH ARTICLE

For this project, you will critically examine research on language development that has appeared in a scholarly journal (e.g., Journal of Child Language, Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, First Language, Child Development, and Developmental Psychology). Scholarly journals are those that have been peer reviewed and do not include newspaper or magazine articles. You are welcome to conduct your literature search using the computer to dial into the campus databases (e.g., PsycInfo), however, articles that have been published on the Internet only (i.e., not in a scholarly journal) will not be accepted.

1) Based on your own interest, choose one published article on 1) second language learning (including sign language), or 2) diverse language learning (including dialects and language acquisition/development of children with disabilities).

2) You must turn in your article by Thursday, March 14th to receive approval for review from the instructor. Once approval has been given, you must email your article reference to the instructor at: weissmanmd@csus.edu (2 points).

3) Evaluation of the article and written paper  - due Tuesday, April 23rd (38 points)

Read and evaluate the article you chose and write an APA-style paper that addresses the points listed below. It is important that the entire paper is written in your own words. If you paraphrase or use direct quotations, you should indicate so using APA guidelines (however, direct quotes should be used scarcely).

On your written paper you should include the following information (which can be provided in about 4-5 pages).

a) What is the hypothesis of the article? What is the argument of the author(s)? If the article presents a controversy, what are the positions involved?

b) Briefly describe the research method(s) of the study. Who are the participants, what are their ages, what were they asked to do as part of the research?

c) What are the results of the study presented? Do the results of the study support the hypothesis? Why or why not?

d) Do you agree with the conclusion(s) of the author(s) about the results? Why or why not? What are some limitations of the research you reviewed?

e) What are your ideas for follow-up studies in this area?

f) APA-style reference (i.e., Author names, publication year, article title, journal name, publication issue).

Note: You must turn in a copy of your article with your paper.

Extra Credit Option (6 points possible): You may present your findings to the class in a 5-10 minute presentation. If interested, please inform the instructor by April 23rd. Presentation dates/times will be assigned by the instructor, and will occur after April 23rd.
