Conversation Topics and Guidelines for Obtaining Language Sample

Your goal is to try and encourage the child to talk as much as possible. Your role is primarily that of listener. You can respond in ways that make sense, but try not to share too much of your own information, rather keep the conversation going by asking questions, for example: Tell me more about that, What happened next, and When did you do that?

Sample topics:

1.         School

What grade are you in? It’s been a long time since I was in that grade, so I don’t really remember very much about (the grade level). Tell me everything you did in school yesterday (or the last day the child was in school). Tell me everything that happened.

Possible follow-ups:

What’s your favorite part of school? Tell me all about that. Why do you like doing that?

Is there anything that you don’t like about school? Tell me why you don’t like that.

What is your teacher’s name? Tell me more about him/her. Tell me about what s/he teaches you.

2.         After School

Tell me about what you did after school yesterday. Tell me everything you did.

Possible follow-ups:

What’s your absolute favorite thing to do after school? Tell me all about it.

3.            Games/Sports/Hobbies

What games or sports do you like to play? What’s your favorite? (If it’s reasonable that you might not know how to play, then Tell me how to play.) (If it’s unlikely that you would be unfamiliar, then Tell me about the last time you played that game/sport. Tell me everything that happened.

Possible follow-ups:

What other games/sports do you like to play? Tell me about the last time you played that game/sport. Tell me everything that happened.

Are there any other games or sports that you don’t like to play? Why don’t you like that one? Tell me about it.

4.         Pets

Do you have any pets? (If yes, then Tell me all about it/them) (If no, then tell me what animal you would like to have as a pet(s).

Possible follow-ups:

Tell me what it looks like. Tell me what neat things it does. Tell me about the bad things it does.

Other possible topics: Friends, birthday (birthday party), Vacations, Dentist/Doctor
