A Review of Sheri. S. Tepper's Sideshow
-----------------------------------------------------------
by Ann Y. Mous
__Sheri S. Tepper's novel is not just an example of good science
fiction but also good writing . Even though Tepper's novel basically is a fantasy
novel, with magic doors and, invisible dragons etc. , it also deals with issues that
science fiction novels usually tackle. For example, the question of what is cultural
diversity appears in her novel. Also, she tackles the question, " What is man's
destiny ? ". This question has been asked in various ways in many science fiction
novels. Usually the novel focuses on one aspect of man's destiny such as where will
he live, what will be his physical appearance , what will be his beliefs etc. Tepper
decides to deal with the question of destiny in a more general manner. She finally
concludes that man's destiny is to become more than man. This answer though vague
opens up a cornucopia of ideas on what man will be if he is more than man. It also
suggests that if man is to survive he will eventually have to transcend his basic
nature.
__However, Tepper's concern with deep questions is not the only reason to read her
novel. Her novel is exciting , engaging and fanciful. She has interesting characters
such as the twins , Fringe , Danivon and Zasper. She does not just introduce these
characters to the reader but fully developments them so that the reader feels intimately
knowledgeable about the characters. While these characters are taking a journey to
the center of Elsewhere, they are also taking a journey of self-discovery and self
examination. Tepper's novel is entertaining because the reader is involved with both
plot and character. I would recommend Sideshow to a science fiction fan , a fantasy
fan or someone who just likes to read.
