Course Policy

- Prerequisite: Spanish 1B or permission of the instructor.

- Class Meetings: We will meet on Tuesdays, at Mariposa 2000.

- Diagnostic Exam: This is a mandatory exam. If you do not pass it with a 70% or better, you must show proof of having fulfilled your pre-requisites, i.e., you need to have Spanish for two years in high school or one year in college. This exam is administered during the first day of classes. Please, do NOT miss this important first day of class, for your seat may be given to another student who wants to add the class and who is attending the first class.

- Transcripts: Bring your transcript with you the first day of class, in case you do not make the 70% line. Transcripts will not be accepted after the end of the first week of class (Friday) and you will not be allowed to attend class thereafter.

- Multiple Intelligences: This assessment is mandatory for it will be the basis for your readings in this course. You cannot receive a grade if you cannot do your readings and exams.

- Homework: Expect daily homework assignments from the text, the Internet, handouts, and, most importantly, WebCT. All work must be typed using double space. Please use font Bookman Old Style, #12.

- Late homework: no late homework will be accepted. You will not be able to take an exam if you have not completed your online Modules or other homework.

- Exams: There will be two (2) exams. There will be no make-ups for exams. The exams will consist of reading texts for comprehension similar in nature to your MI readings and grammar texts similar to the ones that you have aced from your modules. You may NOT take an exam if you are late with your modules up to the date of the exam.

- Quizzes: These will be given randomly during the semester. No make-ups will be allowed for quizzes. The quizzes will consist of questions regarding reading strategies and grammar. You will have 10 minutes to finish each quiz. You will not be able to take the quizzes if your modules are not completed by their due date. Quizzes are worth 15% of your grade.

- Preparation: It is of the utmost importance that you study ahead of time and come to class prepared to participate.

- Internet Readings: Throughout the course, students will choose three readings based on their MI. They will then write a summary and an editorial for each reading. Pay attention to the due date for each one.

- Online Exercises: You will have 12 Modules of exercises (reading comprehension and grammar) to work through WebCT. You may take the quizzes (exercises) only once. You have 30 minutes for each exercise. You might want to consider studying the grammar points before starting your quizzes. You must keep up with the deadlines for the Modules, since you will not be able to take the exams or quizzes if you are late. Pay attention that you take all the quizzes for there should be no blanks in your grade book. These Modules are worth 20% of your grade.

- Grammar: To be able to read well, you must know your grammar, especially the parts of speech and verbs. To review your grammar, so you can complete the Modules, please, go to the site “Learn Spanish,” at http://www.studyspanish.com/. There, you will find all you need. You can read about the grammatical concepts and do exercises as well, for practice. It is a free site. You also have books that will serve this purpose. Use them as much as possible. The more you know, the better you will fare in the grammar quizzes and readings.

- Group Cultural Report: Please check Guidelines for Cultural Reports under Assignments, on the WebCT Homepage. This is worth 10% of your grade (Not for Summer04).

- Individual Cultural Report: You will conduct a brief research in the Internet (one page) about a place, a personality or an interesting topic related to a Hispanic theme, and then, write a summary of it and post on the Discussion Board. You will also need to comment on two other reports. This is part of your homework and worth 15% of your grade. A list of possible topics is given to you in WebCT.

- Files: Please, make a backup or extra copy of all your work. This is your evidence if you are of the opinion that you have not been evaluated properly and in case for which a grade has not been properly assigned. I will keep the exams and quizzes in a file.

- Attendance:  Attendance is mandatory. It is your responsibility to come class. Each absence will be discounted 20 points. Remember that this is an intensive summer course.

- Early Exit: Please, plan to stay the entire period, unless you have an emergency and must leave before the end of the class. You will be given an absence if you leave the class without notification.

- Tardiness: Tardiness disrupts the class. Please, do not come in if you are late as you already have an absence for that day.

- Food and Drink:  You may bring your water only to class. Please refrain from chewing gums or eating in the lab or classroom.

- Attire: wear appropriate attire for class. In order for me to see your face and related to you better, please, remove your hats in the classroom, please.

- Cell Phones/Pagers: Please, turn these items off before entering the classroom unless there is a pending emergency that may need your attention. Notify me about it ahead of time.

- Non-completion of the course: Instructor will not give an Incomplete.

WebCT

Here are some points that should be observed while working online.

It is crucial that you have a Saclink account, and of course an operable computer (WIN98 or XP). You must use Internet Explorer as your browser. Those with a slow access to the internet should consider using the computers in the labs or you will become easily frustrated. There are many labs around campus. Ask for a schedule.

1. Always communicate with me through the WebCT. It is safer, for it is password protected. Please, remember to quote your messages, so I know what we are talking about. Do not use the address: zz_moratto, for it is my student mode and I very rarely go there. My name is at the top of the class list.

2. If you have problems opening some attachments that I will send you, contact me right away.

3. Relay to me, immediately, any problems you have with online exercises.

4. You may use the Café007 to communicate with the entire class. I strongly encourage you to do so because since this is a mostly online course, this communication may be the only means for you to know your classmates.

5. Remember your “netiquette” or online etiquette! Be careful about what you say in writing for it becomes registered forever!

6. Make sure to make a printout of all the exercises with which answers you disagree, and then, discuss them with me.

7. All the Modules will be open to you at the beginning of the course. Before each exam, the Modules corresponding to that period will become unavailable to you. Failing to finish the Modules on time will prevent you from taking the exams and quizzes. It will also jeopardize your grades. Please, act carefully.

8. I would recommend you start all your online homework on the day they are assigned to you, especially your study at www.studyspanish.com or your grammar book.

9. Never wait until the day before the due date to do your homework for machines should never be trusted; they may dump you at any time. Better to be safe than sorry. You must have a good time management to be able to keep up with the deadlines, as your grade and success in this class may be jeopardized.

10. It is a good idea to always make a backup of your exercises, especially the ones about which you are not sure. If you need to print, you must check your grades at the end of each Module, or the system will not allow you a printout, nor it will post your grades.

11. You need to complete each module, each exercise, and related readings to be able to take your exams and quizzes.

12. All the offline homework texts will be distributed at the beginning of the semester so you can work them out at your own pace. Make a note of their due date. Bring a hard copy when necessary. Make sure you have all the texts in hand; since they are part of your Modules, their non-completion would prevent you from taking the exams and quizzes as well.

13. I am always available during my office hours (or by appointment) to discuss any problems you may be having in the class. Please, come speak with me.

14. Since this is a mostly online course, I am also very much available to communicate with you online. I will guarantee checking my messages every M, W, and F in the morning. If, by any chance your message requires more than a three-line answer, please, come speak with me personally or call me during my office hours.

15. Bumper Sticker is the place under Discussion where, at the end of the semester, you will write a bumper sticker for this class.
