The Course: This course will primarily be a survey of the animal kingdom, with emphasis on structure, function, adaptations and phylogenetic relationships of major animal groups. The first week will focus on a review of basic biological concepts as applied to animals. In the next three weeks we will look, in detail, at animal systems and development. The remaining eleven weeks, the bulk of the course, will focus on animal diversity and will cover each of the major animal phyla and classes.
Prerequisite: BIO 10 Basic Biological Concepts. This is a mandatory requirement because it lays an essential foundation of basic chemistry, cellular structure and function, DNA, heredity and evolution. If you have not passed this course, please do not attempt to take BIO 11 Animal Biology!

Optional Assignment:
Write a 3 to 4 page paper (double-spaced, typed) describing an important zoological fact that was discovered in the last five years and reported in a scientific journal that you think should have been included in the text or the lecture material in this course but was not. Describe the associated animal (include at least one illustration), briefly discuss its phylogeny, evolutionary origin, natural history and geographic distribution. Finally describe the biological fact and briefly defend the notion that it should have been included in the course or text. You must cite your textbook and at least two non-Internet sources from the primary literature at the end of your paper. Use citation style shown in Selected References at the end of each chapter in your textbook. In the text of your paper cite references as (author-last-name 1999) or author-last-name (1999) - see page 577b in your textbook for additional examples. This assignment is worth 100 pts but you may consider it an option that will replace one low exam score (even if its score is lower than the lowest exam score! - so only turn in GOOD PAPERS) or you may choose not to do this assignment and keep all your remaining exam scores.
